Many people who operate boats are doing so for the first time. Maybe they are tourists who have rented personal watercraft or fishing boats – but who have never owned a boat in their lives. When driving forward, operating a boat can feel very similar to operating a car. But it’s crucial for those in control to remember that they cannot stop their vehicle instantaneously, the same way they could on the road.
What kind of problems does this create?
One way in which you can see this issue is when new operators are approaching a dock or beach. With a car, you simply drive forward into the parking spot and hit the brakes exactly where you want to stop. But if you do that with a boat, it’s still going to slam into the dock or the beach at almost the same speed. The boat has to use the drag from the water to slow down, so you need additional space.
The lack of brakes can also be an issue when multiple watercraft are operating in the same area. If two operators suddenly realize that their vessels are going to collide, they have no way to quickly reduce speed or stop their boats. It takes a lot of skill to avoid an accident, as things happen quickly, and these new operators often just do not have the experience or the skill that is necessary.
