Evidence of alcohol usage in Keys’ boat crash
According to reports from the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC), a recent boating accident that occurred off Little Torch Key was due, at least in part, to alcohol impairment.
All eight people on board (including the charter boat operator) suffered injuries, and three were taken via helicopter to medical facilities in Miami for treatment. Found among the wreckage of the boat after it crashed into a bridge were cans and bottles of beer and tequila.
Passenger speaks out
The dangerous collision in the Lower Florida Keys happened at approximately 2 a.m. when the fishing charter vessel traveling “at an unsafe speed” struck the South Pine Channel Bridge. One 18-year-old passenger said of the bridge, “It came out of nowhere.”
During the investigation, authorities learned the operator’s license had expired and he had allegedly been drinking all day.
